I just woke up and received a text message from my friend Phillip and Rina. Prof Alviola had a car accident and already passed away. I'm a bit at shock when I read the SMS.
Memories flashed back when I used to sat in the second column, front row of the Entomology Lecture Hall. He's always on time, with his visual slide and good memory, the lecture started. An hour of jampacked knowledge to be adsorbed. Back then, I cannot appreciate the idea of just listening without having any lecture notes to be given by the lecture instructor. Or the 300-item exam witout any repetition (plus it is right minus wrong), especially the multiple matching type.
But at the end, I cannot passed my major course if I will not pass this sumbect Zoology 3 (Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy). He's the only teacher who taught the subject since 1969!
I failed the first and the "suprised" second of the four exam in the class. I thought that would be my end. I studied so hard, studing every night and not sleeping for days just to pass the class. I even compromised the other major subjects that I have. Without passing this subject, I will be staying at the University for another year or so. Among the hundreds who took the 3rd and fourth exam, I was ranked 9th and 7th respectively. I nailed it!
My secret... is not a secret at all.. I just took the things this high-toned Prof taught me in that lecture class. Also by having a thinking that he is not a villain that will want us to failed the subject. He became an inspiration to me especially to my buddy Phillip that do most of the talked to him when we were in class or at the Prof's cubicle.
Oh man I never thought I will be able to pass the exam. The final exam for this subjext, which is required, is 50% of your total grade. I did. I remember holding my paper 229/300. The passing rate is 70% or 210. That's a hell of an exam because we need to study everything that we discussed fror an 2 hour exam and by not passing this exam, meansall of your efforts will be thrown into trash.
Since then I always see him at the ABD in New CAS when I visit my close friend teacher, Ate Grace. He's as tough as before. we thought that he will resign as he used to said. But he's not. Now, two years after I graduated, with some colours, he already passed away..
I will surely miss you Prof. everyone who knew you, you taught and shared a piece of your life. You will always be remembered.
